Special-Needs' Dogs

This page is dedicated to some of our dogs with "special medical conditions" which have required them to be considered as long-term, Pet Refuge dogs and these dogs are available for you to "sponsor" (notations are made in their descriptions). The Sponsor program helps us to continue to provide for their future medical care.  All of these dogs hold a very special place in our hearts.

ROY

Roy is a 4-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer with the biggest, most beautiful eyes!  He enjoys belly rubs, playing fetch and chewing on his nylabone.  Our Roy-Boy came to us with many medical issues.  He was treated for heartworm and multiple internal parasites.  He has separation anxiety issues and care is needed when he is left alone that he doesn't chew something up that will mess up his tummy!  In a recent medical exam, we learned that his heart has been severely damaged from the heartworm.  The damage cannot be reversed and he is now on two heart medications in order to try to sustain his life.  Roy is going into a foster home where he can enjoy his final days of life.  He would appreciate your sponsorship for his ongoing medical needs/testing.

KASEY

Kasey is a Collie/Shepherd mix of about 5 1/2 years old.  This puppy-faced gal is one that has one the hearts of many of the volunteers.  It is our heart that breaks when we learned that a growth that was removed from the back of her tongue was cancer.  But then to learn that it was a fast spreading one, just tore our hearts apart.  She is now in a permanent foster home where she is receiving lots of love and attention. Kacey visits a local retirement community and she spreads her while receiving lots of pets on the head and good conversation!  Please consider sponsoring Kasey for her ongoing medical testing needs.

CHICO

We have had several dogs that have come to us with some sad stories and Chico is one of them.  This little guy has been through a lot and nothing would make us happier than for him to just be happy in a forever home.  He is about a 13'ish year old, Toy Fox Terrier mix.  We recently found he had a bladder stone which was removed and let me tell you...he is feeling much better.  He is really a hoot!  Right now his favorite friend at the shelter (besides the volunteers) is a stuffed pig.  He is a little man weighing only about 7 pounds.  After recent further medical  testing, we have found that Chico is suffering from liver complications.  We are not sure how aggressive his liver will fail and have decided to keep him in a foster home to live out the rest of his life.

ZEB

Zeb is a 3 1 /2 year old, Cattle Dog & Rottweiler mix who is has been moved to our permanent foster page due to behavioral issues.  Poor Zeb just does not do well with strangers; however, the good news is that he does very well in his foster home.  He is very afraid of children and luckily, he does not have to worry about them where he is now.  He does enjoy playing with other dogs and gets to do so as well.  Please consider sponsoring Zeb to help cover his on-going yearly shots which will help keep Zebby a healthy and happy dog just where he is !!

BUDDY

Buddy has finally made it into a permanent foster situation which we are very thankful for!  Buddy was originally adopted out at 5 months of age and returned to us at 1 1/2 years age with some serious behavioral problems.  It takes him a while to learn to trust people.  An angel volunteer is one that he does trust and he is now in their home!  Buddy is now 5 years old and is able to sleep in a bed, play with other dogs which we were surprised he would get along with so well and enjoy just "being a dog" again!  Please consider sponsoring Buddy to help with his on-going, yearly medical needs.

ZENA

Zena started her younger life with us (first coming to us when she was about 2 years old) and now we get the pleasure of sharing her golden years with us as well.  It was a life of tough times and ups and downs but we are trying to make sure she is kept happy now!  She has her own apartment suite, enjoys weekly fast-food runs and plenty of walks.  She is enjoying going to visit Nursing Homes with one of our volunteers, Pam.  This is "perfect" for Zena, because she is a "people-loving" dog.  Zena is now almost 12 years old and enjoys taking a lot of naps and watching her "soaps" during the day.  She has some arthritis in her hips and also is on daily medication for thyroid issues.

PIPPY

Pippy is a Pomeranian. She originally came to us as a stray, in awful shape, with fleas covering her body and causing her to be very anemic and lethargic. After cleaning her up and getting her to eat again, she perked up. She visited the vet and we have put her in the age range of 12-15 years old. Pippy had a dental done and now has very few teeth. It has also been discovered that she has a problem with her knees called floating patellas. Pippy only weighs about 3 lbs and is not gaining any weight. Considering her age and other medical issues, we have decided that it is in her best interest to remain in her current loving foster home rather than put her through another huge change in her life. She is a happy little dog usually found sleeping on someone's lap. Old dogs deserve love too, so consider sponsoring her and help us care for her in her later years.

MADDIE

Maddie is a 3 1/2 year old, Shepherd/Husky mix.  Maddie first came to us as a younger pup who had some food aggression issues.  After being adopted out and returned, we learned she developed additional behavioral issues and now one of our volunteers is working with her thru these issues in a permanent foster home situation.  This is an example, that even though you get a puppy, you never know when they grow up, what behavior issues can be there.  However, even with this, she is really a loving dog most of the time to those that she trusts.  Recently, after a Vet visit, we learned that she is in the beginning stages of possible hip issues and she is on medication for that.  Please consider sponsoring Maddie to help with her ongoing medical costs and future behavioral work that we will do for her.

T.J.

T.J. was found as a stray and was brought to Pet Refuge by the person who found him because she could not care for him.  He was very thin - so he went to live with a foster family who was known (and still is) for their ability to put some extra weight on their dogs!  T.J. was adopted but after 3 years, his Owner was no longer able to care for him so he was returned to us.  He is today, a very handsome gentleman of 8 years old and is in a permanent foster home.  His foster Mom says he is just the perfect dog.  T.J. has some developing hip issues and has needed extensive dental work....would you consider making T.J. your sponsor dog to help with his on-going medical expenses?

PUCK

Puck is one of Pandora's surviving siblings.  He was adopted out as a young puppy and returned a year and a half later.  While waiting for his new adoptive home, Puck began having very serious seizures. He was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and it was also discovered that he has a congenital liver defect.  Puck's epilepsy is severe and requires constant care and monitoring. His medications and testing are quite expensive.  Please consider sponsoring Puck to maintain his extensive medical needs.

MIA

Mia is a Norwegian Elkhound of 3 1/2 years old and has kidney problems.  She first came to us when she was 5 months old and was part of a litter. Since, all of them have been adopted into loving homes, but with Mia's ongoing medical care that is needed for her kidney issues, she remains in a permanent foster home.  She is a happy gal who is slowly starting to enjoy the company of a few dogs although she prefers to receive all of the attention.  She is quite talkative and has no problem in telling you what she wants!  Her loving personality has won the hearts of her foster family.  She is just a joy to have around.  We are blessed that through the help of our Vets, she is able to continue to be in our lives.

TACO

Taco was originally adopted from Pet Refuge as a puppy and returned at the age of 4 1/2 because of behavioral issues (submissive peeing).   Hey, he is just a happy fellow!!  He must have decided early on that he wanted his foster home to become his permanent residence because although he was adopted out and returned 3 more times, he never exhibited any behavioral issues in his foster home - only when he was adopted out!  In fact, he is so attached to his "foster Dad" that his foster Dad says "they must have dated in a former life"!  Taco is now in his permanent residence and is very loved by his Mom, Dad and canine siblings.  He is now 8 years old and would appreciate any help you can give for his yearly shots and on-going medical care.

CHIBI

Chibi (which means small and frightened in Japanese) very much describes this beautiful dog.  Chibi first came to us at about 8 months of age and she shortly went into a foster home.  It has taken her foster Mom well over two years to begin coaxing her out of her shell which meant her sitting in a dog house for many hours each day.  She is still very timid around strangers and is terrified of children; however, she has come to love and trust her foster Mom and Dad and greets them each day with gusto and is most happy and comfortable when she is at their home.  Her foster Mom has begun working with her to try to expand her world and is taking her for walks at Potato Creek State Park.  Chibi does not have a mean bone in her body -- she just has very scared bones!  Today, as you see this picture of her, she is very happy being with her foster Mom and we feel very grateful to her foster Mom for opening her heart and her home to Chibi.

TAZ

"Taz-Man" or "Tazzie" is now 3 years old.  He first came to us as a young pup and then was adopted and returned multiple times.  Taz believes he is just a misunderstood beagle!  So now, he resides in a permanent foster home where he has other dogs to play with, which he really loves.  They unfortunately do not keep him out of trouble but luckily, his foster Mom & Dad love him enough to endure his mischief.  Taz loves his baby which is a squeeky toy and he shares this with noone.  He rules the roost at his foster home and at "Camp K-9" where he gets to go for playtime during the day (thank you Linda Chandler).  His mischief includes climbing out of the kennel (when he has to stay home alone), chewing on doors, romotes and especially underwear (oh no!).  So, since his foster family deals with all of this, Taz allows them to play dress-up with him (which secretly he loves).  Squirrels in the yard are his favorite thing.  So Taz, you have the cutiest beagle butt and even though you are crazy at times, your foster Mom & Dad love you bunches which is a good thing for Pet Refuge!  Please consider sponsoring Taz for his on-going medical needs and future supplies of doors, remotes and underwear (just kidding)!

SHEBA

Sheba  is an approximately a 5 year old, Rottweiler mix who came to us with a litter of young puppies along with her son, Midnight, who was from an earlier litter.  Sheba must have had a difficult life before she came to us because she is fearful of most people and retaliates by barking at them.  She looks a little intimidating when she is barking but truth be known she is quite a gentle sweetheart and loves to always be at your side (or on your bed).  She is learning to trust people in her foster home and is very loving and loyal once she gets to know you. Even though she wasn't thrilled about sporting her "spiffy hat", she willing did so for her foster Mom!

JORDAN

Jordan is a handsome, Beagle/Doxie mix of 6 years old who is housebroken and does well with dogs and cats.  He is neutered and up-to-date on shots.  Jordan is a very sweet boy but he is very fearful of new people but has adjusted fine with his permanent foster Mom and Dad.

CONNOR

Connor had hip surgery recently and is recuperating. He's grown into a very handsome dog of about 2 1/2 years old and is a  Black Lab mix. A sweeter disposition would be hard to find, affectionate, and he's well-behaved. Connor can "sit" and "stay," is housetrained, dog, cat, and kid friendly.  The cost of the surgery was expensive (but he's worth it!). If you'd like to help by defraying some of his medical costs, please consider sponsoring him! (Laureen)

MADISON

Madison is a lab mix of  4  years old.  She has been spayed, gets along with other dogs and even cats and loves being around children.  She unfortunately, has a skin condition called "demodex mange".  This is a  form of mange and is usually caused by a compromised immune system within the dog.  It is not contagious to people nor other animals.  The good news is, it is a manageable condition.   She has been doing well the past few years with this condition.  Please consider sponsoring Madison to help with her on-going medical needs.

PANDORA

Pandora was abandoned at birth and left in a bucket to die.  In her first days of life, she had an infection which caused serious joint damage.  Her right hip completely disintegrated and both of her elbows are permanently damaged.  With swim therapy, she learned to walk and is still doing very well.  No one has told her she's handicapped and she enjoys racing around the yard with her brother.  She will have more and more pain as she begins to age, but she's a tough girl and is quite happy having just reached her third birthday.

STORMY

Stormy is an 8 year old, purebred Bichon Frise.  He suffers from numerous allergies and had serious behavioral issues.  He failed 2 placements, despite the fact that the new owners went the extra mile in trying to deal with his "issues".  The Vet's temperament evaluation revealed that he's probably the product of a puppy mill and that he wasn't socialized early on.  As a result, he has a rather unpredictable temperament.  Stormy has been in a permanent foster home for the past 3 years and has come a long way.  He still has allergy problems and is on a special diet and will need to be for the rest of his life.  When serious flareups occur, he needs oral medication as well as special baths.  Stormy was a chronic biter but has come a long way while in foster care.  Once in a while, he will still tests the waters with his foster Mom though!  She says he will always be the 3 year old she never had -- into everything and laughing at her while he does it !! He has a favorite game of barking at the door, as if he needed to go out.....NO, he really was just waiting for his foster Mom to get up from the chair so he could steal it!  Trash cans and newspapers are no-no's at Stormy's foster home.  There are also certain items in the dirty laundry that he especially loves!!  He enjoys his morning ritual of when the other dogs go out in the morning, he waits and knows that it is special cuddle time with his foster Mom.  Then when the other dogs come in, he gets his time outside.  Being a foster home can hold new adventures everyday with some of our dogs and as you can read, special bonds are built.  Please consider sponsoring Stormy to help with his on-going medical needs.

DUCHESS

A long-timer with us, Duchess recently went to live in a permanent foster home with one of our volunteers. Having stolen every volunteer's heart (especially our President's!), she has been very special to all and loved greatly. Diagnosed with a hip dysfunction when she first came to us, she has remained on medication to help her along. Doing better, and losing some weight, she's improved, and if surgery is ever needed, at least it will be further down the road. A  vet visit though revealed Duchess has some hearing loss. This explains why she probably tilts her head most of the time and has a bit of a lopsided walk. But Duchess is extremely happy in her new home and doing wonderfully in her foster family's loving care. In fact, she's taken up a new hobby - going fishing with her foster dad. He fishes, she lays and sleeps beside him. The perfect combination! Duchess will most likely remain on medication the rest of her life, and she's just a young lady of about six. She'd be really grateful if you'd sponsor her and help with the cost of healthcare.

CARA

We have a few dogs in our system whom we consider to be unadoptable and Cara is one of them. She came to us as a puppy beyond the age at which she should have been socialized. As a result, Cara is very scared of people. With a lot of patience, she has warmed up to her foster mom, but we do not expect her to be able to do the same with other people. Cara is a Black Lab mix of five and a half. She has been spayed, is housebroken, and does well with cats and other dogs.  Cara is in a loving foster home that could use your support in taking care of this girl.

SADIE

Sweet Sadie is a Collie mix of about seven years. Sadie is housebroken, has been spayed, and does well with cats and dogs. She had not been treated very nicely before she came to us and she is very shy and somewhat wary of strangers as a result. Sadie suffers from three to four outbreaks of demodectic mange each year.  This kind of mange is not contagious, but does require treatment. Sadie is in a loving Pet Refuge foster home.
