Special-Needs' Dogs
This page is dedicated to some of our dogs with "special medical conditions" which have required them to be considered as long-term, Pet Refuge dogs and these dogs are available for you to "sponsor" (notations are made in their descriptions). The Sponsor program helps us to continue to provide for their future medical care. All of these dogs hold a very special place in our hearts.

CYRUS Cyrus sure had a guardian angel watching over him
when he made it to Pet Refuge in spring of 2011. He was skinny, matted, and had to
be at least 10 years old (probably older). After some medical checks, we found that Cyrus has
advanced arthritis, hip dysplasia and a thyroid condition. However, he
is a very happy boy in his foster home. He loves cats and other dogs,
sleeping on soft beds, car rides – esp. if they involve trips to
McDonalds. He is an all-around happy dog and still has a lot of life in
him. In July 2011, he also took what was probably his first vacation
ever. He bravely went swimming (which was not for him) and enjoyed going
for boat rides. A huge thank you goes out to Dr. Stephenie
Rensberger at Family Pet Health Center for donating Cyrus’s laser
therapy. Laser therapy helps with the pain in Cyrus’s hips and he
visibly enjoys going to the vet and getting his treatments every week.
Please consider supporting Cyrus’s ongoing medical needs (which involve
pain meds, thyroid meds and nutritional supplements). |

EDDIE Eddie is a gorgeous 5-year old Chow. Unfortunately, his previous owners did not socialize Eddie very well and he will need continued training and socialization. However, we suspect that he will turn into a wonderful, loyal companion for the right family. Eddie likes other dogs, but he would do best in a home without small children. |

CHANDLER Chandler is a special boy who loves other dogs, but who is not so sure about humans. He has trouble understanding that people aren't here to hurt him. He has some odd triggers for aggression (eg. If you walk too slowly, he thinks you are sneaking up on him). Thus we've decided he would be safest in his foster home. If you would like to contribute to Chandler's care, please sponsor him. Click here to sponsor Chandler in our Sponsor-A-Pet Program |

MR. NIBBLES Mr. Nibbles is a 9 year old,
Beagle/Jack Russell mix who's tail never stops moving! He is such a happy
dog but unfortunately has had some bad luck in life. He was recently
returned due to the Vet diagnosing he is diabetic. He is also
partially blind due to the disease. HOWEVER, he is very smart and
figures out how to get around places with minor ease, including climbing
steps on a leash. Nibbles does well around other dogs and cats as
well. He will need insulin injections, twice daily and is on a
special food. His only wish in life is to find that special home
that can continue to manage his disease and give him lots of love.
In return, he'll make you a wonderful and loving companion. |

NORA Nora arrived from one of the puppy mills that we helped last year. She is an older beagle, probably 16-17 years old. She was very overweight upon arrival and her body had a lot of arthritis. Walking was painful for her and we hoped we could give her the chance to feel better and live where she could enjoy the rest of her life. She deserved a better life than a puppy mill and it is great to report that after a diet (She has lost 10 pounds!), a dental and some medicine for her achy joints, she is doing well in her foster home. Exploring her yard is her greatest pleasure. Most importantly, now she can live out her life in a home with the love and care she needs. Please consider sponsoring her so we can take care of her medical needs in her advanced senior years. Click here to sponsor Nora in our Sponsor-A-Pet Program |

RANGER Ranger is a husky mix who has been adopted and returned multiple times. He has some behavioral and housebreaking issues and hasn’t adjusted well in new homes. After so many years in the same foster home, it was agreed it would be best to let him stay where he’s comfortable in his surroundings. Please consider sponsoring Ranger to help us cover the costs of his care. |

ANGEL This long-legged gal is Angel. She is a 4 year old, Lab/Shepherd mix (right now her coat has been shaved). She is housebroken and has nice house manners. Angel has grown to develop a protective nature and she needs time to get to know strangers that come into the home. She is great once she gets to know you. Angel has adjusted to her foster family quite well and due to her protective nature, she will do best staying where she is at. Please consider sponsoring her. |

BARNEY Barney is a very sweet older Treeing Walker Coonhound. Barney has trouble transitioning to new situations but he is doing well in his current foster home. His foster agrees to let him be the happy and well adjusted boy in her home and he is happy that he will get to stay there for his remaining years. Please consider sponsoring him. |

BUBBLES Bubbles is a 7 year old, Collie or Sheltie mix that was adopted and came back to us. When she came back, we discovered she had a few quirks. She can be temperamental at times! She soon went into a foster home and is doing well there so we have decided not to mess up something that is working for her! Please consider sponsoring Bubbles for her ongoing medical care and vaccinations. |

BARNEY Barney is a 17 1/2 yr. old beagle with the most loving personality. He has come back to us do to his owner being unable to care for him any longer. Singing to you is his greatest pleasure and we know that he is just telling us he loves us. Barney has been found to have Cushings Disease and skin problems along with the normal older dog problems. We are working on lowering his weight and he is feeling much better. It is a joy to see an older dog like Barney running across the yard, even though they are short runs. He is going to stay in a permanent foster home so that we can care for him in his senior years. Please consider sponsoring him to help us cover the cost of his care. |

CHICO We have had several dogs that have come to us with some sad stories and Chico is one of them. This little guy has been through a lot. He is about a 17-18 year old, Toy Fox Terrier mix. He is really a hoot! Right now his favorite friend in his foster home(besides the humans) is a green dinosaur. He is a little man weighing only about 6 pounds. Further medical testing has revealed that Chico is suffering from liver complications. We are not sure how aggressive his liver will fail and have decided to keep him in a foster home to live out the rest of his life. |

BUDDY Buddy has finally made it into a permanent foster situation which we are very thankful for! Buddy was originally adopted out at 5 months of age and returned to us at 1 1/2 years age with some serious behavioral problems. It takes him a while to learn to trust people. An angel volunteer is one that he does trust and he is now in their home! Buddy is now almost 9 years old and is able to sleep in a bed, play with other dogs which we were surprised he would get along with so well and enjoy just "being a dog" again! Please consider sponsoring Buddy to help with his on-going, yearly medical needs. |

PUCK Puck is one of Pandora's surviving siblings. He was adopted out as a young puppy and returned a year and a half later. While waiting for his new adoptive home, Puck began having very serious seizures. He was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and it was also discovered that he has a congenital liver defect. Puck's epilepsy is severe and requires constant care and monitoring. His medications and testing are quite expensive. Please consider sponsoring Puck to maintain his extensive medical needs. |

TACO Taco was originally adopted from Pet Refuge as a puppy and returned at the age of 4 1/2 because of behavioral issues (submissive peeing). Hey, he is just a happy fellow!! He must have decided early on that he wanted his foster home to become his permanent residence because although he was adopted out and returned 3 more times, he never exhibited any behavioral issues in his foster home - only when he was adopted out! In fact, he is so attached to his "foster Dad" that his foster Dad says "they must have dated in a former life"! Taco is now in his permanent residence and is very loved by his Mom, Dad and canine siblings. He is now 12 years old and would appreciate any help you can give for his yearly shots and on-going medical care. |

SHEBA Sheba is an approximately a 10 year old Rottweiler mix who came to us with a litter of young puppies. Sheba must have had a difficult life before she came to us because she is fearful of most people and retaliates by barking at them. She looks a little intimidating when she is barking but truth be known she is quite a gentle sweetheart and loves to always be at your side (or on your bed). She is learning to trust people in her foster home and is very loving and loyal once she gets to know you. Even though she wasn't thrilled about sporting her "spiffy hat", she willing did so for her foster Mom! |

"PERMANENT FOSTER" |
MADISON Madison is a lab mix of 4 years old. She has been spayed, gets along with other dogs and even cats and loves being around children. She unfortunately, has a skin condition called "demodex mange". This is a form of mange and is usually caused by a compromised immune system within the dog. It is not contagious to people nor other animals. The good news is, it is a manageable condition. She has been doing well the past few years with this condition. Please consider sponsoring Madison to help with her on-going medical needs. |

PANDORA Pandora was abandoned at birth and left in a bucket to die. In her first days of life, she had an infection which caused serious joint damage. Her right hip completely disintegrated and both of her elbows are permanently damaged. With swim therapy, she learned to walk and is still doing very well. No one has told her she's handicapped and she enjoys racing around the yard with her brother. She will have more and more pain as she begins to age, but she's a tough girl and is quite happy having just reached her seventh birthday. |

STORMY Stormy is an 8 year old, purebred Bichon Frise. He suffers from numerous allergies and had serious behavioral issues. He failed 2 placements, despite the fact that the new owners went the extra mile in trying to deal with his "issues". The Vet's temperament evaluation revealed that he's probably the product of a puppy mill and that he wasn't socialized early on. As a result, he has a rather unpredictable temperament. Stormy has been in a permanent foster home for the past 3 years and has come a long way. He still has allergy problems and is on a special diet and will need to be for the rest of his life. When serious flareups occur, he needs oral medication as well as special baths. Stormy was a chronic biter but has come a long way while in foster care. Once in a while, he will still tests the waters with his foster Mom though! She says he will always be the 3 year old she never had -- into everything and laughing at her while he does it !! He has a favorite game of barking at the door, as if he needed to go out.....NO, he really was just waiting for his foster Mom to get up from the chair so he could steal it! Trash cans and newspapers are no-no's at Stormy's foster home. There are also certain items in the dirty laundry that he especially loves!! He enjoys his morning ritual of when the other dogs go out in the morning, he waits and knows that it is special cuddle time with his foster Mom. Then when the other dogs come in, he gets his time outside. Being a foster home can hold new adventures everyday with some of our dogs and as you can read, special bonds are built. Please consider sponsoring Stormy to help with his on-going medical needs. |

DUCHESS A long-timer with us, Duchess recently went to live in a permanent foster home with one of our volunteers. Having stolen every volunteer's heart (especially our President's!), she has been very special to all and loved greatly. Diagnosed with a hip dysfunction when she first came to us, she has remained on medication to help her along. Doing better, and losing some weight, she's improved, and if surgery is ever needed, at least it will be further down the road. A vet visit though revealed Duchess has some hearing loss. This explains why she probably tilts her head most of the time and has a bit of a lopsided walk. But Duchess is extremely happy in her new home and doing wonderfully in her foster family's loving care. In fact, she's taken up a new hobby - going fishing with her foster dad. He fishes, she lays and sleeps beside him. The perfect combination! Duchess will most likely remain on medication the rest of her life, and she's just a young lady of about six. She'd be really grateful if you'd sponsor her and help with the cost of healthcare. |

SADIE Sweet Sadie is a Collie mix of about seven years. Sadie is housebroken, has been spayed, and does well with cats and dogs. She had not been treated very nicely before she came to us and she is very shy and somewhat wary of strangers as a result. Sadie suffers from three to four outbreaks of demodectic mange each year. This kind of mange is not contagious, but does require treatment. Sadie is in a loving Pet Refuge foster home. |
