Cats in Foster Homes Available for Adoption

Since Pet Refuge is a No-Kill Animal Shelter, we always have more pets (especially cats) than we have room for at our Mishawaka location. Luckily, there are people and families willing to SHARE their homes with these unfortunate animals.  BUT, since they live away from the shelter, they are not always able to be at our adoption days, which, of course, diminishes their chances of being adopted into a permanent home with a family to call their very own!

We're hoping that, by setting up this page, we will be able to "showcase" these needy kitties and, if you see a feline (or two or three) you'd like to meet, call our office or contact us by email to arrange a convenient time to give a foster cat a chance so that we may continue our mission of caring for homeless pets!

Last Updated on 2/5/12

Please Note: We currently have a bumper crop of adorable kittens in all different colors that are available at our adoption events at the shelter as well as Petsmart South and North. The kittens listed on this website represent only a very small selection of kittens that are actually available for adoption.

Fiona

McGhee
McGhee and Fiona (Fee)

DOB August 28, 2011

McGee
is very loving and outgoing in his foster home. He is also very playful and full of adventure. The affectionate and adventurous side of him does not show up at adoption events because change and new places make him very nervous so he growls. McGee would be ok with other cats and dogs who are cat friendly and adults and older children.
Fiona (often called Fee) is sweet and gentle and playful. She is able to adjust to change even if she does not approve of the change. Fiona would do well with other cats and cat friendly dogs but would prefer older children and adults.

McGee and Fiona would love to be adopted together. (Aliceanne)

OLIVER

DOB June 2010

What a beautiful boy Oliver is! He is a 1 1/2 year old buff and white cat. He likes being petted and likes playing with toys. He gets along with other cats and he doesn't mind the dogs, as long as they aren't always chasing him. This little guy was adopted as a kitten and returned to us recently due to his owner developing allergies. Do you have room in your heart and home for this friendly boy? (Mary Ann)

MAYFLOWER and her son PILGRIM

DOB 2006

"Pilgrim has been adopted"

Mayflower and her son Pilgrim are both very sweet and sociable. Mayflower has been a great mom and takes very good care of her one and only baby. They are very attached to each other and it would be wonderful if someone would find it in their hearts to adopt this mother and son pair. (Linda)

CARA

DOB: April 2009

Cara is sweet, gentle and loves to sit in your lap. And she has the softest fur that just begs to be petted! Cara was originally surrendered to Pet Refuge in Spring of 2010 and after spending a year and a half in a home with an older lady, she was returned to us when her adoptive mom had to move in with a relative.

Cara is currently in a foster home with other cats. She enjoys the company of other calm animals, but would probably be just as happy as an only cat. She is not the most active cat, but she loves chasing a laser pointer. Cara’s ideal home would be quiet and she would like nothing more than to be someone’s lap cat. Do you think that you could provide Cara with a loving forever home? (Christina)

RITA

Rita is about 5 1/2 months old. She is very sweet - a little shy at first but warms up quickly. She has the silkiest chinchilla like coat. (Kris)

CHELSEA

DOB June 2011

Chelsea came in with Hannah, Jack and their mother Emma). She is a very well behaved and beautiful kitty and gets along great with all her foster siblings. Chelsea will need to go to a home with someone who has lots of patience and love as she is not quite sure who she can trust yet. She's a little jumpy as she gets to know you, but as she learns she can trust you, she will slowly start showing you a little more attention. Belly rubs are a good way to win her over. (Amy)

Hannah

Jack

HANNAH and JACK

DOB June 2011

Jack (the red tabby) and Hannah (the torti) came in with their mother (Emma), who looks identical to Hannah and is about 1 year old and is also available for adoption. They are both very friendly, love to play, and they are so full of energy they rarely sit still. Hannah immediately wants your attention, rubbing on you, purring, crawling in your lap. Jack needs a little extra time to learn he can trust you, but once he realizes he can, he too loves to be petted and loved on. Hannah is probably more of a lap cat than Jack is but they both will curl up in bed with you at night to keep you toasty warm. They love to keep each other company and play together, so they would love to be adopted together. But they are also available to be adopted by themselves. (Amy)

MS MUFFET

DOB August 24 2011

Ms Muffet is a very sweet cute kitten. She is feisty and keeps up with her bigger brothers and sisters. She grew up with some older kittens and a surrogate mom. (Kris)

ASIA

DOB December 2006

"I've Been Adopted"

RITA and ROSA

DOB August 26, 2011

These two siblings are all super social. They love to play with other cats and kittens and are not at all afraid of dogs.

Rita & Rosa are both sweet, sweet calicos. They cannot sleep closer to their foster mom during the night. (Laura)

MYSTERY CHARLIE

DOB FEBRUARY 14,  2011

Mystery Charlie is a handsome short hair tuxedo male. He is very cuddly and loves attention and he also loves to play! He never tires of toys and will play with you until he's worn you out. In his foster home, he gets along well with other cats and children and thoroughly enjoys playing with them. Mystery Charlie is an adorable bundle of fun who is looking for a loving home where his outgoing an lively personality will be appreciated. Mystery is not able to make it to every adoption event so please call the shelter to ask if he will be there. (SV)
MARA

DOB March 2008

Mara would love a quiet home because she really gets upset when there is a lot of noise especially loud noises from children and dogs. She is ok with cats but not too many of them. Although she enjoys human company she really would prefer that people not pick her up. Mara is a very sweet girl with a little spice and she would love to find a home that would appreciate that combination.
BABYDOLL

DOB 2006

BabyDoll is approx 5 years old and pure love! She loves to be held like a baby, cuddled in your lap, or just looking out the window. She's pretty mellow, but still talks for her breakfast and follows you around. She is scared of cats and dogs-they seem to know this and pick on her-so she needs to be an only cat. She was originally found as a stray by an older couple. They took good care of her but could not bring her into their house because of their very territorial cat. The wife became ill and on her deathbed asked her husband to promise her he would find a good home for BabyDoll so that she would always be taken care of. She passed away and the husband continued to care for BabyDoll, but he had to leave town for a few months. So he called Pet Refuge and we want to help him keep his promise to his wife by finding BabyDoll her purrfect forever home! She is fine with older children, prefers a calmer environment, and would be the perfect constant companion offering loads of love! (Amber)

GABE GOOD NITES

DOB April 15, 2011

Gabe is a big sweetheart, but very playful. He is good with children 5 years +, small dogs, and other cats. Gabe is involved in every family activity.

He does not like to be alone, but he likes to follow people and watch to see what we are doing. He would make a great, loving, playful cat for a good home (with lots of treats). (Athena)

Siesta and Bella

SIESTA

DOB April 4, 2011

Looking for a cute, cuddly, and playful addition to your family? Look no further! Siesta is ready to provide endless entertainment to one lucky family.

Siesta was originally surrendered when he was only about 6 weeks old. The day he moved into his foster home was probably the happiest day of his life. Siesta loves toys, soft beds, human attention – and he loves having playmates. In a matter of a few hours, Siesta had introduced himself to his new best friends and he is more than happy to play with everyone. However, all of his favorite playmates have been adopted one after another and he is currently the only kitten in his foster home. He has done extremely well around the adult cats and will happily cuddle with them and try to talk them into some playtime. He is wonderful teenage kitten with a shiny black coat and a long, lean body. Siesta doesn’t understand why everyone keeps overlooking him and he is hoping that he will be the lucky cat that will get adopted next! (Christina)

If you would like to see Siesta play with his big foster brother Valencia (who has been adopted), check: http://youtu.be/jQ5Uiw32L1M

McGinnis

POSEIDON and McGINNIS

DOB April & May 2011

"Poseidon has been adopted"

These two boys are not related, but they share the same foster home and get along very well with each other.
Poseidon (born in April 2011) is growing into a beautiful black DSH cat. He has hidden tabby stripes that can be seen in the sunlight. He can be a bit shy at first, but he has learned to love cuddling. He needs a little patience to get to know you.
McGinnis (born May 2011) has darling black and white markings. He loves people and is quite the purr machine. He loves to sit in your lap and does excellent around kids. Reward him with catnip toys and he will play and entertain you. (P+K)

Poseidon

STORM

DOB February 2011

"I've Been Adopted"

SNOW TIGER

DOB February 2007
Snow Tiger is a gentle giant. He likes to lay around and take in the scenery. And he was giving us all kinds of funny poses and facial expressions for his photo shoot. When he wants attention he will find you. He would do well around other cats or dogs. Older children would be best. (Bonka)
PRISCILLA

DOB August 2008
Pricilla is a talker. She gets along well with other cats and dogs. She likes attention but just in small amounts. She has the biggest eyes. She would do well with older children. (Bonka)

WILLIE

DOB April 2007

Willie is a big baby. He is very laid back. He likes to have some attention but not much for being held. He gets along with other cats and dogs. He would do well with older children. (Bonka)

MERLIN

DOB May 2008

Looking for a cat that will greet you at the door and tell you all about his day? Then Merlin is the cat for you! Merlin is a talkative boy and he isn’t shy to share his opinion on things. He is active, playful and very outgoing. Merlin originally came to Pet Refuge as a kitten and is still waiting for his forever home to come along. He gets along well with other cats and small dogs that will not chase him. (Linda)

Malibu (left) & Daisy (right)

Daisy cuddling with one of her kittens

Malibu

Daisy
DAISY and MALIBU

DOB 2010

Both Daisy and Malibu are about 1 year old. Daisy found her foster home in March 2011 along with her 5 newborn kittens (who have all been adopted). Malibu found her foster home in May 2011 along with her sister who has been adopted.

Daisy is friendly and affectionate. She’ll lie on your lap and loves to be petted. She would like a quiet environment to be able to rest and relax in the sun. She also prefers to be the top cat.

Malibu is very well behaved and gets along great with other cats. However, something traumatic must have happened to her before she found her way into her foster home. She’s not quite reassured just yet that she can trust people but she is slowly learning.  She would need someone with a lot of patience and understanding to accept her the way she is.

Malibu would have to be in a home with another cat. Since she and Daisy have been together so long, and they are often found cuddled together, they would love to go to their forever home together! (Amy)

TOBY

DOB May 2008

This big, beautiful Maine Coon mix might be a bit shy when he first meets you, but he warms up quickly to people. Once he knows you, he is very sweet and loves attention. Toby does well with other cats and loves to play. (Linda)
MISSY

DOB June 2006

Missy is a very sweet grey tabby who likes to play with her toys. She get along very well with other cats and small dogs. (Linda)

CHUCK

DOB January 2011

My name is "Chuck".  I am a Buff colored Tabby.  I was rescued in very poor physical condition. With a lot of tender loving care and nourishing food, I have grown into a very handsome young man.  If you let me, I will sleep with you at night.  I also will curl up on your lap on occasion.  I have learned my name and when you call "Chuck", I most likely will come running to you.

I just hate going to adoption events at Petsmart and Pet Refuge.  Loud noises and people poking their fingers through the cage scare me so bad that I growl and will bite if continuously annoyed.  However, I would like to emphasize that I do not display this negative attitude when at home in my foster care. I am curious, playful and often too smart for my own good.  I would very much like you to call my foster Mom and make arrangements to come and see me. I will do my best to prove to you that I am worthy to share your home with me.  As an added point, somewhere in my ancestry, I have Siamese in my bloodline with large pointed ears and sharp facial features.  I am anxiously waiting to meet you.......... (Judy)

MELVIN

DOB March 2010

Melvin is a beautiful Lynx Point Siamese who likes to roll around on the floor and flirt with people. Melvin is a happy, healthy cat these days, but when he was little, his chest didn't develop properly. He still doesn't like to be picked up and carried around much, but he will gladly sit in your lap to cuddle. He gets along well with other cats and doesn't mind dogs at all, but he should go to a home without small children. (Kim)

Veronica

Vanessa

VERONICA and VANESSA

DOB  March 2010

Veronica and Vanessa were left outside of Pet Refuge in a box with 5 other cats. We believe that they are sisters. Both of them are still kittens – they are very playful and active and even though they are clearly attached to each other, they also like other cats in general.

Veronica (the dilute tortie) is still a bit more shy than her sister, but with the right person and some patience, she will hopefully forget about her traumatic past and continue to improve.

Vanessa (the brown tabby) looks like a Maine Coon mix. She is more outgoing than her sister Veronica, but can be a little timid when meeting new people.

Vanessa and Veronica would like to be adopted together, but they would also do well in a quiet home with another cat that could show them the ropes. (Linda)

XANDER

DOB October 2006

When you meet Xander now, it’ll be difficult to believe that he was found as a starving stray just a few months ago. Since then, Xander has made an amazing turnaround and he has blossomed into a big, handsome cat with a shiny black medium-length coat. Xander is very sweet and playful and clearly likes to be around people. However, he tends to be fairly dominant around other adult cats. He would probably do best in a home without other cats, but he might also do well with a laid-back female... or, as we recently learned, a kitten. (Linda)

Hildy (left) and Palidan (right)

HILDY and PALIDAN

DOB May 2010

These two teenage kittens are littermates. They were born to a feral mother and were rescued by their foster mom when they were only a few weeks ago. They are both very sweet and social, but Palidan (red tabby) is the more outgoing of the two. He is talkative and playful – the cap of a whipped cream can is his all-time favorite – and likes to be held and loved on. His sister Hildy (dilute tortie) is a little more reserved. She likes to sit close to her foster mom, but she is not very keen on getting picked up and carried around. Hildy and Palidan like each other, but they also enjoy the company of other cats in general and they both share their foster home with a dog that they like. (Kim)

PYEWACKET

DOB April 2005

Pyewacket is a long-haired Lynx Point Siamese. He is very social and does well around other cats and small dogs. But, most of all, Pyewacket loves people! He is very sweet, loves to cuddle with his foster mom and sleeps at her side every night in bed. Unfortunately, he is not too crazy about going to adoption events and does not show well.
Pyewacket came to Pet Refuge when his family lost their home.  He came in with 2 other cats who have already found their forever homes. When we originally took him to the vet, we learned that Pyewacket has a Grade 3 Heart Murmur. He is not currently on any medication for it and could live a long and healthy life with this condition – but if he would ever have to be put under anesthesia, he would need to be very closely monitored. (Linda)

DELILAH

DOB April 2007

This beautiful girl is a Lilac Tabby. Delilah came to Pet Refuge with 3 of her kittens and now that they have been adopted, she is ready for a home of her own. Delilah’s ideal home would be quiet and without small children. Delilah has done well around small, gentle dogs, but she is petrified of large dogs after having been attacked by one. (Linda)

SANDY

DOB May 2008

This gorgeous Maine Coon mix has long, silky hair and enjoys getting all of the attention. Sandy would probably do best as an only cat in a quiet home with no children. She would much rather be the center of attention and not share with anyone else. And she is not shy to show her affection and will climb into your lap and follow you around – but she’ll also tell you when she’s done getting petted. (Rox)

PEPE

DOB April 27, 2010

Pepe was found by a Jimmy John's delivery driver who was kind enough to pull over when he noticed a cardboard box in the middle of the road. Imagine his surprise when he found a litter of tiny kittens in the box. Despite being abandoned at such a young age, Pepe is a sweet, well-adjusted little kitten who loves to play with his brother Hunter and his other foster siblings. He also enjoys sleeping cuddled up to his foster mom. (Linda)

ANDREW

DOB November 2009

Andrew has quite the story to tell – and he really wishes that someone would have listened to him right when he arrived at Pet Refuge. Andrew was left in box with 4 kittens outside our shelter. Without ever thinking twice about it, we assumed that Andrew was the mother cat to those kittens and we set them up in a cage at the shelter. The kittens immediately tried to nurse on Andrew and everyone seemed comfortable. However, after moving into a foster home, his foster mom started to notice that Andrew didn’t seem very motherly and was trying to spend more and more time away from the babies. Since they were old enough to be weaned, she brought “the mom” to the vet to get “spayed.” Imagine her surprise when the vet called to let her know that, after shaving “Aurora’s” belly, they realized that this was not the mother cat after all – but that he was probably the dad. No wonder he was tired of babies of trying to nurse on him. He was trying to tell us all along that he is not their mommy.

Despite all of this, Andrew is a very sweet cat who loves people. He can be somewhat quiet and reserved at first, but he would blossom in a nice home. And he sure doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. (Linda)

Andrew with his babies

  "DOBERMAN"

DOBIE ROSE

When Doberman first came into Pet Refuge, her foster mom thought that this pretty girl needed a new, pretty name for a new beginning - and she was renamed Dobie Rose. Dobie Rose has a very unusual smoky grey fur with white tuxedo markings. She is still settling into her foster home but she is starting to enjoy human attention and her once skinny body is filling out very nicely. (Linda)

Dublin

DOB April 2009

Poor Dublin was abandoned in a box when he was just a little kitten. To make matters worse, he was injured when a volunteer found him. Our vet determined that his leg had been pulled so hard that all off the nerves were damaged and Dublin would never be able to gain full use of it. Dublin thus had his leg amputated as a kitten. However, he has no problems getting around and climbing up on his favorite cat trees. He is a sweet kitty that enjoys human attention and doesn’t mind other cats. To make his life perfect, Dublin just needs a home of his own! (Rox)

Little Miss Muffet

DOB March 2010

Little Miss Muffet is a sweet girl that knows what she wants. She will come up to me in the evening and walk around on me and sit and look at me until I follow her upstairs and fill the kitten food dish for her. She is a typical kitten that loves to run and play and chase anything that moves. She also loves to snuggle once she winds down. (Dawn)
Raven

DOB 2007

Raven came in with a litter of kittens from a hoarding situation. She was very skinny and her hair was very thin. Her kittens were all adopted and now she is looking for her forever home. Raven has filled out and she has a very thick, fluffy coat. She loves to play with balls. She is very sweet and loves to be stroked and have her chin rubbed. She is a little shy around multiple cats but should be very comfortable in a quiet "only cat" home or one with only one or two other cats. (Dawn)

Layla practicing her kickboxing skills

LAYLA

DOB December 2009

Layla is a classic brown tabby and she is cute as a button! When Layla first made it into Pet Refuge in February of 2010, she was unsure of people and was hiding for a few days.

Layla has come a long ways in her foster home. She loves her playtime, especially her squeaky mouse and feathery toys. She is also enjoying the company of other cats and kittens and will need an active playmate in her new home!

Yet while Layla is doing well around people she knows and trusts, she is still shy around strangers. She will need a quiet home that will give her time to adjust and allow her to meet her new family at her own speed. (Christina)

NOLAN

DOB  April 2009

Zoom-zoom-zoom!

This fun cat is a little race car. He's always on the go, always on another adventure, and always entertaining.

Though Nolan is a tad shy, he's happy for a little love and affection - just so long as you don't try to pick him up. He would rather sit beside you for his lovin'.  He can't stay around too long for those scratches, though, because he has places to explore and zoom off to! Nolan is just fine with other cats and this little ball of energy would just love to meet someone who could slowly build a real relationship with him. (Carole)

NIKI

DOB December 2008

This Beauty doesn't miss a thing!

Actually, it may be more accurate to say Niki doesn't miss a person! Ever! If she sees someone coming to visit, she likes to be one of the first cats to greet that person. After all, this little opinionated spunky girl doesn't see why she should be the second one to get petted, when she could be the first!

Niki loves balls but mostly, she loves people. When she first meets you, she may seem like she's playing hard to get because she'll sniff you as if to say, "I'm just checking to see if you're worthy of me." But don't worry; it will turn out that you ARE worthy of her, and then she can't get enough attention.  She's not a lap cat, but she loves to be petted and will lie beside you. Yep, Niki thinks a home with a couple of people and maybe a couple of other cats just like her would be paradise! Maybe you could take her to your paradise? (Carole)

MUSIC

DOB August 2008

Music is such a beautifully colored Tortie! She loves sitting on your lap and purring for you. Sometimes she can be a little hand-shy when you go to pet her but she is getting better at allowing you to pet her. She gets along well with other friendly cats and doesn't seem to mind the dogs in her foster home. Music gets very stressed when attending adoption events so if you would like to meet her, let us know and her foster mom can contact you. Music would be your best friend if you allow her the time to get to know you. (Mary Ann)

TOASTY

DOB 2006

Toasty is a cute DSH black and white female that was found in an empty apartment with her three babies (Pancake on the buddy cat page is one of her now grown kittens). She is very curious and playful and likes to be petted. She would do best in a quieter home as she prefers to avoid a lot of activity. Toasty would do well as an only cat being the center of attention. (R&B)

MEI QUI

DOB April 2008

Mei Qui is an adorable DSH brown tabby and white female. She loves to be held and if you are not petting her when she wants to be petted, she will keep nudging your hand with her nose until you get the hint. She likes to pick things up and carry around her "treasures". She loves her head rubbed. Her name means "ROSE" in Chinese. (R&B)

BABY CHOO

DOB May 2005

Baby Choo is a DSH white & black male. Baby Choo is a very active and nosy young man. He likes to be into everything. He is not big on being picked up and held, but he loves to be petted and will let you know when he wants to be loved on. He does well with other cats (after a short adjustment period) and enjoys running around the house playing chase games with them. Baby Choo is current on all of his vaccines, neutered and micro-chipped.

**UPDATE**

Choo WAS adopted by a loving family recently but was, unfortunately, returned due to being too active and playful for the older cats already in the household. The older cats developed behavioral issues due to his presence so the family reluctantly had to bring him back.  Baby Choo will need a home with other active and playful cats or else to be an only cat in the home. (R&B)

BONZAI

DOB April 2007

Bonzai is a sweet, Domestic Medium Hair Brown Tabby & White female. She is very petite and looks to have some Maine Coon mixed in her as she has the fluffy tail and prominent ear and paw tufts of hair. Her favorite thing is to jump up onto the sink and drink from the faucet. She loves playing in the water. Since she has a dominant personality, she would prefer to be an only cat, but would do ok in a house with one or two others. She is sweet and playful. Not big on being picked up and held, but likes to be petted. (R&B)

  SUSHI

DOB March 2005

Sushi is a sweet dsh grey female. She enjoys being petted and playing with toys on strings. Sushi also gets along well with other cats. She is a bit shy in new surroundings and around new people, but once she gets used to things, she is a very happy girl. She loves canned food and napping in the sun. Sushi is spayed, current on her vaccinations and micro-chipped. (R&B)

BOBBIE

DOB 2007

Isn't Bobbie a fluffy-eared cutie-pie?  This nice little brown tabby has medium length, silky fur.  She is playful, has a very sweet personality, and gets along well with other cats. LG

LEVI

DOB January 2004

This handsome DSH black male was rescued from a house fire.  Levi loves everyone and does great with other cats.  His best friend is Frisco (see the Buddy Cat Page for Frisco) and they can often be seen leaning on each other while they walk together (why not adopt a pair?)  He does great with children too!  Levi is the perfect combination of being both affectionate and playful.  He would be happiest in a home where he can get plenty of love, preferably with another feline friend to keep him company while you are gone. (Angela)

We also are in need of good foster homes to help us care for the animals who continue to need our care and love. If you are interested in becoming a temporary foster home for one of our pets (we have cats and dogs in need of foster care), click here to fill out a form to see if you qualify for our foster home program.
