What's happening around the shelter?

These are pictures of when Ben first arrived and shortly after having his surgery.

Well, it has been a little over one week before I arrived at Pet Refuge. My name is Ben, after Gentle Ben, and I was found as a stray. The people that found me had a tough time catching me at first. But, when they did, they realized that I was holding my leg up and boy, it really hurt! So, I was brought into Pet Refuge and they took me in. After a trip to Kryder Vet Clinic, they found that I had a broken leg and needed to have surgery to have a pin put in to help it heal. My leg feels a little better now and already, I am starting to use it! I am on my second week of a 6 week recovery and after that I may need some water therapy to help me regain full, proper use of my leg. I look forward to the day that I can run and play again. But this time, not in front of a car! Would you consider sponsoring me to help me during my recovery journey? Maybe I'll see you in about 7 weeks and you can adopt me?

You have probably seen our beautiful Sasha Sue on the available dogs page as she has been on a "medical hold". Well, since then she has been to our Vet to have the lump on her belly removed and we were very sad to learn that it was cancer. Our Vet went back in and did some exploratory surgery and believes she did get it all. For the future, she would need to be carefully monitored for any growths and have them checked. One of our Labby lover fosters stepped in and took Sasha into her home so that she would not have to be at the shelter. True to her breed, she is an absolute love. If you are a Labby lover too and would like to give Sasha a home with you, please contact us. If not, maybe you would consider helping us to help her with future Vet expenses? Sasha is 8 years old. She came to us because her family could no longer keep her. Click here to sponsor Sasha Sue

We are in need of volunteers that will come in and help care for the dogs at our shelter. If you are 18 years or older and have 3-4 hours a week, you can give a dog that is waiting for his or her forever home to come along, the care and love they need. Please stop in our shelter and fill out a volunteer application today! |

Cleaning Volunteers needed!
If you enjoy being around dogs, make a "New Year's resolution" right now and volunteer with us! We could really use your help! We are in need of volunteers to help on cleaning shifts, to take care of the dogs that stay at our shelter. A commitment of 2-4 hours, one day a week, is all they need and you would be making a big difference in their lives. We especially need morning and afternoon help on the shifts. Please email us or call our shelter (574-256-0886) if you can help. |
Foster Homes needed! The dog department is also in need of foster homes for puppies and adult dogs waiting for their forever homes to come along. Foster homes are important to the dogs as you will be helping them to learn obedience and housebreaking skills (if needed). Puppy foster homes are especially needed as we have many litters of pups on our waiting list that we cannot take in. Puppies need more monitoring and we do not like them to have to stay at the shelter. Adult dogs will also benefit from being in a foster home as it is less stressful than the shelter can be. If you are interested in becoming a foster family, please email us or call our shelter at 574-256-0886. Pet Refuge provides all medical and food costs. |
