HOLLY

Holly is full of life and personality. She is an active, bouncy 1.5 year old Shepherd mix. She has not lived with children and might accidentally knock over a small child in her youthful exuberance. Holly has a very nice personality and likes to roll over for a good belly rub. We have also recently learned that Holly loves other playful dogs and she is now best friends with Gilligan (see below). Holly will need a securely fenced-in yard since one of her favorite pastimes seems to involve chasing cars and other fast moving objects. (O)

GILLIGAN

Gilligan looks like a Catahoula Leopard mix dog. He is a very handsome boy who is smart and food motivated. He loves to play with toys – especially the squeaky variety – and running through the yard. He is a young, active dog who will need an active family with a fenced-in yard. Gilligan seems to like most of our female dogs, but would prefer to not share his home with a male dog. He also requires a cat-free home. (O)

Rascal
JACK and RASCAL

Don't let the name fool you, Rascal is one sweet boy who is full of life and love. When he's not being his usual puppy self, he's happy to cuddle with you anywhere you want.

Jack: The boss! His favorite position is lying in your lap like a baby and getting his tummy rubbed.

Jack and Rascal are now 5 months old and filled with puppy energy. They are Cocker Spaniel/Beagle mixes. They love other dogs, but probably no cats for these boys. A taller fence is required for these guys. (F)

MICKEY

Mickey’s life used to be just great! He was welcomed into a family as a puppy. They played with him, cuddled, never corrected his puppy antics… until he turned into an active 10-month, 50-pound teenage dog that had not learned any manners. All of a sudden, Mickey found himself at another shelter.

Mickey is now safe at Pet Refuge and learning some basic obedience commands. Mickey is an exuberant Labrador-Pointer mix that enjoys playing with other dogs and has great social skills with them. However, he will ned a cat-free home.

He would benefit from a fenced-in yard and continued training in order to grow into the best canine companion he can possibly be. (O)

RUDY

Lab Lovers Alert! Rudy is looking for you. This handsome boy is a real love and still very active. He loves to go for walks, run and and play ball. Rudy is housebroken, good with school age kids, dogs and cats. Car rides are his favorite. A fenced yard would be best for him. Come meet him soon. (F)

KEEPER

Keeper is a very sweet 10-year old Yorkie. He loves to be close to his foster mom and enjoys a nice warm sweater on cold winter days. Keeper is tiny – even for a Yorkie. Shortly after Keeper came to us, we noticed that his teeth were in really bad shape and had to be extracted. Yet even though he is now toothless, Keeper is much happier and has no problems chewing his food. He is working on his housebreaking skills. Keeper likes other dogs and does just fine with cats. (F)

Yukon trying to talk Annie into chasing him

YUKON

Yukon is a very handsome 2-3 year-old red Husky. He is a young active boy who likes to sing. When you visit him at the shelter, Yukon will even bring you his toy to the front of the kennel, hoping that you are ready to play with him. Unfortunately, life at the shelter has been stressful for this sweet boy and he has developed a sensitive stomach. He can’t wait to move into his very own home. He likes other dogs and will need a yard with a privacy fence. (O)

ANNIE

"Adoption Pending"

Annie is a Lab/Mastiff/Greyhound mix of about 6 years old. She is an exceptionally sweet dog who loves to be around people. As soon as she hears her name, her tail will start wagging expectantly and she will roll over for a belly rub. Annie is a really cuddly girl and would love to be a couch potato. But don’t let her age fool you, Annie still has a playful side to her. She adores other dogs and will happily play with them, whether they are 8 or 80 pounds. She also seems to like cats. (O)

ROKKO

Rokko was rescued from another shelter that was running out of room. Even though he still looks like a puppy with his giant paws and his little teddy bear face, he is actually an adult dog. Our best guess is that he is an approximately 1-year-old Chow-Retriever mix. Rokko is a medium-size dog of about 40 pounds. He really likes to be around people, but he can be a bit picky about other dogs. (F)

PEACHES

Little Peaches looks like a miniature Husky, maybe mixed with a herding dog. She weighs about 35 pounds and is only a year old. Peaches had a pretty rough start in life. She was scared and hand-shy when she first came to us. Yet after only a few weeks, Peaches has already made a lot of progress and is starting to come out of her shell. Peaches is an energetic dog who loves to play with other dogs that match her energy level. Bear (see below) is her favorite playmate at the shelter. She will require a fenced-in yard. With a little bit of patience, Peaches will make someone a wonderful, playful dog. (O)

BEAR

Bear’s middle name should be “Happy.” Even though you can tell that Bear has not experienced much kindness from humans in his short life, this bouncy boy does not hold a grudge. He loves to be around people and other dogs and he is full of puppy energy. Playing with Peaches (see above) is one of his favorite pastimes.

Bear is an approximately one-year-old Aussie mix. Due to neglect, Bear was almost hairless when he first came to us. When you look at Bear these days, you can already see what a handsome boy he will be once his hair grows back all the way. Bear can’t wait to tell his new family how happy he is that he was rescued from his previous life! (O)

ALFIE

"Adoption Pending"

Alfie is an adorable little 6 year old Chihuahua mix. Even though you might think that Alfie is middle-aged, this little guy runs like the wind and enjoys nothing more than his playtime in the yard. A fenced-in yard is thus high on his wish list for his new home. Alfie gets along fine with dogs his size and he was very sweet when we introduced him to cats. Alfie is a nice little dog and will make someone an active, yet snuggly lap dog. (F)

GRISSOM

Grissom is an active and playful 1-year old Hound mix. He loves other dogs and is perfectly content to let them be the boss. Grissom enjoys playing with younger, more active dogs but has also done well around more laid-back companions. In many ways, Grissom is your typical happy hound mix: he can be a bit stubborn and hard to train, but he is a happy, goofy boy, who likes to talk to you and entertain you. Grissom is an active dog and needs a fenced-in yard and preferably someone who will take him on walks. His leash manners could still use some improvement, though. (O)

Lenny and his friend Grissom

LENNY

Meet Lenny! Lenny is a very handsome 1.5 year old Chow-Retriever mix who combines the best of both breeds. He is smart, loyal, people-friendly (even though he would not do well around young children) and very affectionate. Lenny already knows a lot of basic commands and he is focused, food motivated and eager to please. He is currently busy learning good house manners in his foster home. Lenny still has a lot of puppy-goofiness in him and will happily chew on stray sandals if you are not paying attention.

Lenny loves dogs and would do best in a home with another playful dog. He is also quite smitten with his feline foster sister. But shy kitties beware: Lenny is used to a fearless cat that initiates play and enjoys slobbery baths. Lenny is most likely unaware that some cats might be more dignified than that.

Unfortunately, we recently discovered that Lenny has hip dysplasia and luxating patellas. Both of these conditions are fairly common and can usually be well managed with nutritional supplements (Glucosamine and fish oil), but will most likely cause more medical needs later in life. Lenny would benefit from regular exercise. He really enjoys his daily walks and is used to walking several miles each day.

Lenny is a very affectionate, loving boy who will make a great addition to one lucky family. (F)

Update: You can follow Lenny's adventures in his diary!

VENUS

Looking for a dog that adores people and will give you a full body wiggle when she sees you? Look no further! Venus craves attention and would like nothing more than a family to call her own. As a matter of fact, this little girl would much prefer to be your only 4-legged family member to make sure that she gets all of the attention she can possibly get. Venus is a medium-sized 2-3 year old Shepherd mix who loves to run around and play. Venus would probably do well with older children. This energetic girl also requires a fenced-in yard. (O)

Here's a video of Venus with some of our volunteers: http://youtu.be/BK-ik7u9wtw

ZOLA

Zola is a Toy Fox Terrier of about 2-3 years old.  She weighs about 15 pounds.  She has done well around other dogs and may do well around dog-friendly felines.  Zola is a very sweet natured girl and loves to cuddle on the couch. She is also doing well around the children in her foster home. Since Zola is able to climb chain-link fences, she will either need a privacy fence or an avid leash walker. Zola really enjoys her walks and does well on leash. (F)

The safer way to enjoy the pool: without water! As an added benefit, you don't even have to get wet.

MAGGIE MAE

Maggie Mae is a one year old  "Chi-Winnie".  It takes her a little while to warm up to new people but once she does, she will be your friend for life.  She has had a few accidents but new places and new smells have a way of doing that to a dog.  Maggie loves to play and enjoys attention so if you are looking for a special someone with a long body and short legs please come and meet Maggie. (F)

BRIDGET

Due to her puppy mill upbringing, Bridget can be a difficult dog.  She is very intelligent and obedient.  She would do best as an only pet, with a privacy fenced yard, and with a somewhat experienced owner.  She participates in agility and clicker training, and has done wonderfully with that.  She needs a special home to accommodate her special needs. (F)

MOJO

Here's Mojo!  Lots of energy in this guy.  Mojo is a Shepherd mix of about 2 1/2 years old.  He is housebroken and does well around most other dogs - especially females.  He gets excited when out in the yard and really enjoys barking at other dogs, children and people passing by, so he'll need some work on that or perhaps you wouldn't mind that.  A privacy fence would be nice!   He is an affectionate and loving dog. PUNKY

This scruffy little guy is an 8 year old terrier mix who is quite the little lover to those he knows. Give Punky a little time and he'll give you a lifetime of love! And he will provide lots of entertainment and has a lot to say - he's a terrier after all. The Punkster gets along well with most other dogs but he enjoys chasing cats and should go to a home with no children. (F)

ALEX

Alex is a 9 year old Min Pin mix that lost his home to a new family member having allergies.  Alex himself has an immune deficiency that is maintained with daily doses of prednisone. He is a very distinguished canine gentleman, quiet and reserved. (F)

BUSTER

Looking for a unique, medium-sized mutt that is sure to turn some heads? Long body, short legs, a Shepherd head on a Bassett body – that’s Buster for you! For the most part, there will also be a toy in Buster’s mouth. He’s always ready for a nice game of fetch and he would make a great walking companion. Don’t let his short legs fool you, Buster is an energetic boy that requires a fenced-in yard, an experienced owner and a home without young children. In turn, he'd be happy to let you play dress-up with him. (O)

MISSY

Missy is an Australian Shepherd/Brittany Spaniel mix of about 1-2 years old.  She is a friendly gal with people and enjoys running and playing fetch outside.  She weighs about 40 pounds.  A fenced yard is preferred for her. (O)

Missy having fun at agility

NATE

Nate is a 5-6 year old Dobie mix who just loves to be petted. He'll even give you his paw for more if you stop too soon! Car rides and walks or runs also rate high on his list! Nate sometimes forgets that he is not the boss, so an experienced owner would be best for him. Also any kids in his home should be teenage or older. (O)

SHEP

Shep would like nothing more than his very own home. He is a sweet, talkative dog who likes to be around people. During our annual sleepover at the shelter, we discovered that Shep is also quite the cuddler. He is an approximately 4-year-old Shepherd mix and he will need a securely fenced-in yard. Shep likes to hang out with other dogs, but he is not a big fan of rough play. (O)

STAR

Star is a year and a half old cattle dog mix. She is full of energy and is looking for someone who can provide her with plenty of exercise and companionship. She loves to be with people and does well with adults or possibly older children. She does not get along with most other dogs but she likes cats. She is doing well with housetraining with a strict schedule. She is crate trained and is used to being crated during the working hours. She would love a big, fenced in yard to run around in and chase squirrels, but will need a fence higher than four feet. She walks well on a leash and loves walks and runs. Her ideal home would be with someone who is dedicated to walking and running her daily. (F)

CHAMP

Champ is one dog that keeps us laughing.  He is a young squirt of about 10 months old and ALL BEAGLE! He will need finishing work on his housebreaking and should do fine around children although he may want to play with their toys!  He is great around people and seems to like most other dogs.  A secure, fenced yard is required because this boy has a lot of energy. Champ would also make a great agility dog and he LOVES to play fetch and is usually airborne by the time you throw the ball. (O)

EMMA

Emma is a 7yr old Cocker Spaniel, who is looking for a new forever home. She came to us because her owner has health issues. Emma is very active and a beautiful lady. A home with another dog around her size would be ok. She must have a fenced yard as she likes to wander.

Emma appears to be housebroken. She loves belly rubs and will give you lots of kisses too. Emma will be at our shelter on Saturdays only, so please come and meet her. (F)

MILANO

Maybe Milano wants to be a rabbit, because she loves to run, hop and leap snow drifts, even with her short legs. But when she is tired, she makes a great lap dog. She was born September 11, 2011 and weighs about 5 pounds. We are guessing her to be part chihuahua and terrier. An active family with no small children would be best for her. (F)
TOFFEE

Stop by to meet the sweet mom of Milano. Toffee, a mixture of Chihuahua and terrier, is young and guessed to be under 2 yrs old. Toffee will patrol her yard and keep unwanted "friends" away but she also loves to cuddle on the couch. A secure fenced yard will be best for her. (F)

CHEWEY

Chewey is 5-year-old Chihuahua. He is very loving and snuggly with people he knows and loves to sleep right next to his foster mom. He is cat friendly, even though he sometimes thinks that he doesn’t have to share toys or attention. Chewey does not show well at adoption events and will need time to get used to new people. We request that his adopters have no young children and have previous dog experience. However, Chewey would make a wonderful, devoted companion to someone that is willing to get to know him. He can’t wait to be someone’s lap dog! (F)

Anyone ready to give me a belly rub?

ELMER

Elmer is a short-legged Basset mix (maybe with some Labrador). He was rescued from another shelter that was running out of space. Elmer will make a fun addition to a lucky family. He likes people, most female dogs and did well when we introduced him to a cat. According to Elmer, cats definitely have potential as playmates and he was rolling on the ground, trying to get Pickles (see shelter cat page) to play with him. If you are looking for a friendly, medium-sized dog, make sure to come in and meet Elmer during one of our upcoming adoption events at the shelter. (O)
NIKITA
Nikita is a 1-year-old, 11 pound Miniature Pinscher Mix. She is full of puppy energy & loves to run play with other dogs. Her favorite past time is pulling one toy at a time out of her toy box. As you can see, she likes to dress up! She is working on potty training in her foster home. She is a bit too skinny, so we are trying to put a little weight on her before her adoption event debut on December 28th. She is still in the "play biting" stage, so she would be best in a home with no young children. (F)

Julio when he first came in
JULIO

When Julio arrived at Pet Refuge he was in a pretty sad state, he virtually had no hair on his little Chi Chi body. Some thought he should enroll in "Hair Club for Men" but what he really needed was good food, medicated baths, antibiotics, and some tender loving care. As you can see from his after picture, in just a few short months he became a handsome older gentleman with a beautiful snow white coat. Julio is 10 plus years young and still has a little zip to his step. He loves the ladies and the ladies love him. So if you are looking for an older more mature man in your life, one that will share a movie night, or snuggle under the covers, Julio is your man. (F)
SPENCER

"Available Soon"

Meet Spencer!  He’s a 10-year old Miniature Pincher and weighs in at 16.5 lbs.  He was just rescued from another shelter and will be available for adoption soon.  Spencer is very adorable and will probably bond with you very quickly and follow you everywhere.  He is good with children (10 years and up) and other dogs.  He is housebroken.  He is also crate trained and can stay in his crate while you are gone to work during the day or at night.  He loves to curl up underneath his quilt blanket and you won’t even know he is there except for the bump in the middle of the quilt!!  You will need to call ahead for a special appointment to meet Spencer because he does not yet attend adoption days. "On Medical Hold"

These four rat terrier mix puppies are from the same littler born Oct.14, 2011. Their names are Hoover, Dyson, Eureka and Kirby. They are terrier mix dogs whose personalities vary as much as their coloring and markings. Each of them is loving, active and agile.  (F)

CONWAY

"On Medical Hold"

Conway is a handsome 5-6 year old Golden Retriever-Chow mix. Conway has your typical Chow personality: He is a strong-willed dog that can be standoffish around strangers and will probably become protective over his home and his person. Conway requires an experienced dog-owner – preferably with breed experience. Conway should live without young children and he requires a fenced-in yard. If you are willing to spend some time getting to know Conway and providing him with a sense of stability, you can surely turn him into everything his breed should be: a smart, loyal, trusting friend that will happily follow your leadership.
