Special Cats

The cats you see on this page are special needs felines. Most of these are in permanent foster but we still need sponsors for their special medications and care. Some of their stories are as heartbreaking as their impossible or hard-to-place status!

SENIOR CAT

FRONT DECLAW
AUDREY
DOB 1994

This old girl would sure appreciate a loving, calm home where she could spend the rest of her years napping peacefully in a sunny window.  Audrey is a long-haired torbie that enjoys being petted and brushed.  She would make a perfect companion for a senior citizen like herself.

**Audrey has recently been put on a daily medication she will require for the rest of her life**

THOMAS

Years at Pet Refuge

DOB MARCH 1996

SENIOR CAT

Curly is a neutered odd-eyed white Cornish Rex mix.  His very best buddy and surrogate father is another available foster cat, Thomas. They need to be placed together. Thomas has been back with Pet Refuge since 2003 after being returned to us following the divorce of his family.  He is a sweet giant of a cat who is good with kids and dogs as well as kittens and other outgoing cats. He has been on insulin shots for several years with no complications.  The shots are easy to give and the total cost for a year of supplies is well under $100.  Won't you consider this dynamic duo !?! CHESSIE

DOB 2002

SENIOR CAT

Chessie is a sweet, short-haired, black female.  She has a *neurological issue that makes her walk like a drunken sailor, but that doesn't slow her down.  She gets around just fine and doesn't require any special medical attention.  She just needs your loving attention and a place in your home!

*A mild form of cerebellar hypoplasia - not the severe case like Laura (see below) has. This is a condition that the cat is born with, it is not contagious nor does it progress with age. This condition causes her to be slightly un-coordinated when she runs or walks.  It doesn't  affect her quality of life in any way.

LAURA

(DOB October 2006)

Would you please be my sponsor? My name is Laura and I was born in October of 2006. I was brought to Pet Refuge when I was four weeks old. I was born with cerebellar hypoplasia which affects my motor skills. Actually, I cannot walk but am able to drag myself short distances with my front legs. I need to be placed in the litter box several times a day since I am unable to do this by myself. I am a very lovable and happy kitty despite my problems. I have very attentive foster parents and foster kitties that I get along with and enjoy very much.   JAM

LIBBY

(DOB July 2006)

Libby is a feisty little girl who really enjoys life.  She likes to play and she likes to snuggle.  Libby tested positive for Feline Leukemia.  She came to us with five babies who, sadly, did not survive.  When she was taken to the vet to be spayed it was discovered that she has a serious heart murmur.  On a scale of 1 - 6 with 6 being the most serious, Libby is a 4.  Libby is in a permanent foster home and is enjoying her precious life.  Please consider sponsoring Miss Libby  to help pay for her medical expenses.  MC

WEEBLES

(DOB 1999)

Weebles is a special needs permanent foster cat that is in desperate need of sponsors. He was found as a stray on the side of the road and after testing was done on him, it was determined that he has "cerebellum hypoplasia" (somewhat like cerebral palsy in humans).  He's a super sweet and playful cat even though he has no ability to walk alone. He's placed by his food and water and on puppy pads at least 4 times a day.

Even though Weebles cannot walk alone a K-9 cart was made special for him. Unfortunately it wasn't quite right in construction and needs some modifications to work. We are looking for a local talented welder to help rebuild Weebles' cart to work with his needs. AM

Howie is a gem and very loved by his foster family. AM

Meow, my name is Maggie Mae, aka Chatty Catty.  I talk all the time.  I'm a very big, friendly, brown tabby spayed female. I'm litter box trained and need to be the only feline in your house due to being Feline Leukemia Positive, but I love friendly dogs. Please consider me to make your home complete.

PERMANENT FOSTER

RAGTIME

(DOB 1998?)

Ragtime's story:
Ragtime was a frightened Maine Coon mix cat who was on her own for about a year.  She survived on handouts and huddled under sheds or whatever shelter she could find.  Her fur was matted and hung in ragged patches so she was called Rags.
No one was able to take Rags in because she was so scared that she growled if anyone tried to pick her up. She would become very upset if another cat came near her and all noise scared her.  A Pet Refuge volunteer took Rags to Pet Refuge where she became so distressed that she could not be handled or petted at all.  Poor Rags had to be sedated to get tested and basic shots at that time.  The volunteer took her home and kept her in a quiet back room. She now allows her foster Mom to brush her and will sit with her foster Mom
or the very quiet cat loving dog in the house.  She still does not care for other cats but she has come a long way.  After being inside and getting regular grooming Rags looked so much better that her name was changed from Rags to Ragtime. Ragtime is upbeat music and this cat is feeling more upbeat
about her life so it seems to fit. AO

GARFIELD

FRONT FOOT DECLAWED

When you think of the comic strip, Garfield, a huge orange, lazy cat immediately comes to mind!  Well, we have the "real" Garfield at our shelter.  The orange tabby declawed male is just as big and "relaxed" -- NOT LAZY, he says -- as you always imagined. Unfortunately, Garfield is special because he has a condition called "Horner's Syndrome," which means something one of his eyes is smaller than the other and he tilts his head a bit to one side.  The good news is that Horner's syndrome is not painful. It just looks abnormal. In a lot of cases, the cat simply grows out of it. Garfield also has some litterbox issues that we are hoping a patient owner will be able to work with.  (AM)

PERMANENT FOSTER

VICTOR

Could you think of Victor and sponsor him? He was found as a stray, with his eyes sealed shut from a severe infection.  Luckily, neither eye had to be removed, but they are cloudy and his eye sight is very  limited. It has gotten so bad that Victor is scared of all noises and voices until he identifies his foster mom. Fortunately, Victor has a very patient and generous foster home but any and all sponsorships are welcome for the duration of his life. (Kim)

SYLVESTER
DOB 2004

Sylvester is a handsome black & white tuxedo cat with an adorable black nose.  He is a curious, spirited (& sometimes downright ornery) boy that liked to keep track of everything that was going on in our Main Cat Room.  Sylvester can be a bit of a handful so he is a very lucky boy to have found a permanent foster home willing to put up with his "quirks"!

ZEPHYR
DOB 2002

Zephyr is a very lucky cat who gets his name from his benefactor!  A young foreign college student took a liking to a stray in his apartment complex but could not keep him.  He fed him and kept him safe for several months (with the help of some other students) until we had room to accept him into our system.  Zephyr is a friendly and acrobatic cat but has a tendency towards being bossy and was very much in charge of all the residents and MCR visitors.  He is playful but because he could get downright ornery with his playmates he was very lucky to find a permanent foster home able to deal with all of his "quirks".
