Special Cats

The cats you see on this page are special needs felines. Most of these are in permanent foster but we still need sponsors for their special medications and care. Some of their stories are as heartbreaking as their impossible or hard-to-place status!

LEXI

DOB October 2009

After six years of volunteering for animal rescues, I thought I had seen it all. I have fostered cats with BB pellets in their legs and infected bite wounds in their neck; cats from hoarding situations who had polyps growing out of their ears and whose paws were burned from standing in their own urine for so long; cats who were almost hairless from fleas; a blind, 4-paw declawed cat who was dumped at a high kill shelter by her owner of 8 years; and cats who had been so traumatized by people that they panic every time I get close. But last week, I realized that there was one thing I had never seen before and never wish to see again: the person who did this to a helpless animal. Instead of treating Lexi for fleas – a problem that is easily fixable with a $10 medication that is available at any pet store – her family put her outside and obviously neglected to provide her with food or water.

Luckily, Lexi was rescued by a concerned relative who, without a doubt, saved her life. When Lexi made it to Pet Refuge, she was emaciated (she weighed in at 5.5 pounds – 9 pounds would probably be a healthy weight for her), was so severely dehydrated she could not even urinate, and was anemic from a flea infestation. She had been without food for so long, her stomach could not even handle small amounts of food. After several days on an IV catheter, Lexi is back home with me and slowly recovering from her ordeal. Yet despite everything she has been through, Lexi has not lost her faith in humanity. She is sweet, cuddly, talkative and wants nothing more than to sit in my lap and get endless attention. It is painful to pet her emaciated body, but she clearly longs for human touch.

I am thankful that Lexi is back with me and that she is clearly ready to move on and get past the neglect she has suffered. It will certainly be a while before Lexi will be available for adoption. If you would like help Lexi in the meantime, please consider making a donation in her name or you can donate some of her favorite food: Iams ProActive Health Adult Digestive Care (in the pink bag). (Christina)

Update (January 8, 2012):

During her first 5 weeks in her foster home, Lexi has gained a truly impressive 3.3 pounds (=60% of her body weight)! She’s still too skinny at 8.8 pounds, but she is definitely gaining her strength back and she is looking great.

DINKY

DOB ~1996

Dinky is an older cat, about 15 years old, who was found struggling to cross a busy street. Unfortunately she is not a healthy cat as she suffers from chronic diarrhea and incontinence. BUT she is one of the friendliest cats you could ever meet. She is very affectionate and never complains. She eats and drinks well. Due to her health conditions she is a permanent foster and will remain there where she is loved very much. Please considering sponsoring her to help with the costs of her care.

Bocelli

DOB July 2011

Little Bocelli was found with a badly infected eye. Despite the fact that he must be in a lot of pain, little Bo is just a sweetheart and trusts his rescuers to take good care of him and make him feel better.

Update: On August 12, Bocelli's left eye was surgically removed. The surgery was successful and Bo is now in a foster home where he is recovering nicely. Please consider donating in Bocelli's honor to help us pay for his surgery and his ongoing medical needs.

Leonardo

DOB January 2006

Looking for an ornery cat with lots of personality? Then Leonardo is the cat for you! This gorgeous Maine Coon loves attention - but on his own terms. He's been known to nip your ankles to get your full attention and dart out the door when you're not watching. Leonardo needs a family with a good sense of humor that will put up with his quirks. And he would do best in a home without small children.

Leonardo was found as a stray by another shelter. One of his rear paws must have been caught in a trap at one time and was causing him some pain. To alleviate the pain, our vet decided to amputate the toes on that paw.  He can run, jump and do everything a normal cat can do. And he loves to play with kitty toys and makes little chirping noises when you call his name. BRISTOL and ADRIAN

Bristol (est. DOB July 2010) and Adrian came in together. At first we thought they were siblings because they are so attached to each other. But it turns out Adrian is older, so they might be a mother-daughter pair. They are definitely related and very close.

Adrian came in with an infected mouth and her teeth were so bad that all of them had to be removed. Because she is older and was in poor shape she had difficulties during surgery and experienced a rare reaction to the anesthesia. This reaction was similar to a stroke. For a while we were very concerned about Adrian. Luckily, Adrian not only had the help of the caring volunteers at Pet Refuge but she had the love and care of Bristol too. We made sure that the two were together as often as possible while Adrian was recovering in the Infirmary. She is so much better now that she is with Bristol in the Small Cat Room at the Pet Refuge shelter. It would be wonderful if these two ladies would be able to find a loving home where they could stay together.

UPDATE: Adrian was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Please consider sponsoring her (and her best friend in the world, Bristol) while we are adjusting her medication and ding some further testing.

MARCELLA

DOB September 2010

Despite a whole number of medical problems, little Marcella could not be any sweeter or more loving. Marcella was originally brought into Pet Refuge after she was found walking down a sidewalk, covered in urine and feces. Her poor little bottom was so swollen and infected, we couldn’t even determine if she was a boy or a girl. Our vet determined that Marcella was born with male and female reproductive systems and needed reconstructive surgery. In addition, she suffers from an atomic bladder and atomic colon, which means that she has very little control over her bladder and colon. Unfortunately, there is no surgery available to correct this condition, but Marcella is on daily medication and we are hoping that she will develop more muscle tone in her bladder and colon as she grows older.

Luckily, Marcella doesn’t mind wearing a diaper or getting daily baths. She is one happy kitten who just loves to be held and cuddled. Everyone that meets her can't help but fall in love with her. Marcella is doing very well in her foster home, where she enjoys playing with other cats and her toys – the turbo scratcher is her absolute favorite.

Please consider sponsoring Marcella and make a contribution towards her medical needs. (Linda)

PORTER

DOB March 2006

Porter is a real sweetheart who loves to be around people. Unfortunately, Porter's diabetes has recently become more serious and he now requires twice daily shots. Since he is now on insulin instead of a special diet, he is living freely in a special needs foster home experienced with diabetic cats. We are still working to get his sugar regulated with insulin but he is starting to feel better. In his foster home, he especially likes to snuggle with a special 10 yr old human but he is a pillow-hog !

JASPER

DOB March 2004

Jasper, a Black & White male, came to Pet Refuge with a tail injury.  A bobbing took care of it so now he is a man-made Manx!  He's a very sweet and affectionate boy with a cute little meow.  He's just waiting for someone like you to come and take him to his forever home.

After a recent health scare, we learned that Jasper has to be on prescription food (Royal Canin SO) to keep him from developing kidney stones. As long as Jasper remains on this food, he will lead a long healthy life. Until Jasper finds his perfect home, please consider making a donation to help us pay for Jasper's special food.

TWILIGHT

DOB: October 2003
Twilight entered Pet Refuge after he was dumped in a taped up box in the PetSmart parking lot during one of our adoption events. Clearly, Twilight wasn't treated very well in the past, but you'd never know it with his friendly attitude towards humans as well as other kitties.

Unfortunately, Twilight's sad story doesn't end there. Shortly after he came to us, we discovered that his teeth were in terrible shape and that he desperately needed several teeth extracted. During this surgery, Twilight had an extremely rare reaction to the anesthesia and suffered a stroke. He is now recovering and literally has to learn how to eat, drink and walk again. We are hopeful that Twilight will eventually make a full recovery, but it'll be a long road. Please consider sponsoring Twilight and make a contribution towards his medical needs.

Samantha

DOB April 2008

Samantha originally came from an outside setting and she is still learning to trust humans. She is very shy around people and does not want to be picked up. However, she is great around other cats and would make a wonderful buddy cat. And who knows, in a quiet, patient home, she might eventually decide to show her beautiful face more often. Please consider sponsoring Samantha while we are trying to find a person that will give Samantha the time she needs to regain her trust in humans. (Rox)

Chrissy in September 2010

Chrissy in May 2010
CHRISSY

DOB May 2007

Chrissy is a gentle, sweet girl with a little handicap. She was dropped off at the Humane Society with a head injury of unknown origin, and as a result she hangs her head to one side and is occasionally a little off balance. We can only guess what accident or abuse caused her injury, but despite this, she has amazingly kept her trust in people, and remains an affectionate, brave little girl. Her strength through crisis and difficulty is truly inspiring, and her friendly demeanor will melt anyone's heart.

UPDATE: Chrissy has made amazing progress in the few months she has been with us. As you can tell from the pictures, she doesn't even look like the same cat anymore. She has gained some much needed weight and she even likes to follow her favorite volunteers around. Quite different from a few months ago when she was hardly able to lift her head.

Lilly with her foster siblings

PERMANENT FOSTER
LILLY

DOB September 2009

When I first met this beautiful 6-month-old kitten, she was in a small cage at a different shelter, desperately trying to get my attention. Lilly was sticking her little paws out, rubbing against the door, clearly wanting to be picked up and loved on. Lilly had been part of a large cat hoarding case and she was probably in the worst medical shape of all the cats that had survived the ordeal. She had upper respiratory and eye infections – like almost all of the other cats from this trailer. And on top of that, she had a bad ear infection. As soon as I picked her up, I noticed puss running out of her ear. Yet despite all of this, Lilly started purring immediately and made it very clear that she wanted to come home with me.

The next morning, our vet determined that Lilly did not only have one of the worst ear infections she had ever seen, she also had polyps. Lilly was put on ears meds, pain meds, and antibiotics. Every time I cleaned her ears, it just about broke my heart. This is clearly a painful process, but Lilly is just the best girl. She just looks at me with her big, trusting eyes and as soon as I am done, she hops onto my shoulder and rubs her little nose against my face. This is a kitten that loves life and is thankful for everything we have done for her. She enjoys being close to her foster mom and playing with her foster siblings. On good days, you can’t even notice that Lilly has medical problems.

However, after three surgical procedures, Lilly still has recurring problems with polyps and an infection that has moved into the bone in her inner ear. Please consider supporting Lilly’s ongoing medical care by sponsoring her or making a donation in her name. You can help us make sure that Lilly has the best life she can possibly have. (Christina)

SEBASTIAN

DOB November 2006

"Can you love me even though I'm FIV positive and toothless? FIV is hard to catch - it's really not that scary!"

Sebastian is a Long Haired Orange Tabby that, unfortunately, has FIV.  You can still take Sebastian home with you, even if you have other cats that aren't FIV positive, just as long as everyone is neutered and are easy going - unlikely to get into terrible fights that would involve deep bite wounds.  Obviously, Sebastian can’t bite anybody since he is toothless but he should not be bit by another cat. Sebastian is a big, handsome boy who would just love to go home with you.

2 PAW DECLAW

PERMANENT FOSTER
SYBIL

DOB August 1999

Sybil is an orange tabby and white female who is very vocal.  She has an insistent, somewhat grumpy quality to her voice that belies her sweet personality.  She demands attention, but she returns the favor with lots of purrs, leg rubs, and head-butts. Sybil will co-exist with other cats but seems to prefer cat-friendly dogs over other cats. She loves to sleep with you! A few of Sybil's favorite past times include eating canned food, sleeping in the sunshine and licking plastic bags.

***UPDATE***

Sybil has continue to have ongoing medical issues that are somewhat of a mystery. Due to this and her "cattitude" she is unlikely to be adopted. She's very content to be in her foster mom's home - making it her permanent foster home!

PERMANENT FOSTER

SYLVESTER

DOB 2004

Sylvester is a handsome black & white tuxedo cat with an adorable black nose.  He is a curious, spirited (& sometimes downright ornery) boy that liked to keep track of everything that was going on in our Main Cat Room.  Sylvester can be a bit of a handful so he is a very lucky boy to have found a permanent foster home willing to put up with his "quirks"!
