Senior Cats

The cats you see on this page are senior felines. Most are still very adoptable - unless otherwise noted. They have as much love to give, however, as any young, active kitty. Some of their stories are as heartbreaking as their hard-to-place status!

CAPELLA

DOB 1995

Capella is a sweet but feisty spayed tortie who adores people!  She spent 4 years at Pet Refuge then another 2 years at a different cat rescue that tragically burned down several years ago. Capella was one of the lucky ones to escape the fire but now suffers from a chronic sinus condition due to smoke inhalation. She has spent the last 2 years in a foster home and does not show well at adoption events (stresses her out and makes her grouchy). Capella "tolerates" other cats and dogs but would enjoy being your one and only!  Capella loves to sit on your lap and also likes to sleep on the pillow!   (KP)

MULBERRY

DOB June 1997

Mulberry LOVES to eat and, like many humans, is currently fighting the battle of the bulge while trying to get back her feminine feline figure.  Mulberry is a long-time shelter resident who desperately needs a home.  The black female "tolerates" other cats -- but isn't too happy about it!  Classified as big-boned, she is a friendly-but sometimes feisty-cat who would do best as an only pet in an adult household. Won't you give Mulberry the chance she deserves?

JEWELS

DOB September 2002

Jewels is a sweet (but sassy) spayed female.  She tolerates other cats, but would much rather have one-on-one attention from an adult human or older child.  She loves to sleep on the bed, cuddle next to you on the sofa, and have her belly rubbed. She has been working on her weight problem (haven't we all?) and should stay on a lower calorie food. She is also does okay around small dogs.

BUTTERCUP BETTY

DOB January 2002

This pretty torbie and white female currently lives in our main cat room at the shelter.  Normally mellow, Buttercup Betty can get a bit aggressive if provoked.  She loves to play with the plastic rings from milk jugs.  This playful girl was returned to Pet Refuge because her owners developed allergies.

SARAH
DOB 1998

Sarah is a dilute calico female that is considered a senior cat. She loves a strip of sunshine to lay in and a human to scratch her chin. Sarah is Queen of the Small Cat Room and rules with an iron paw - because of this she would prefer not to share her humans with other cats.

CALLIE
DOB 1996

Callie is a beautiful, long-haired tortie. She is a shy but sassy girl. Callie loves to be petted, but she also likes to be the only cat getting your attention.  She enjoys being petted for a while, but then she gets a little testy.  You just need to know when to stop petting her when she's had enough.  She would probably do well in a home without small children.

SENIOR CAT

Year at Pet Refuge

BUDDY

DOB 2000

Buddy is another of our senior residents. He is a handsome brown tabby with a striking white bib under his chin. Buddy loves attention and is definitely a lap cat but prefers to be the only cat in your life.

Mattie is a super duper friendly front declawed and spayed female.  She loves people and other pets.  Mattie has recovered from a nearly fatal liver problem with an unusual side effect :  she will only use a doggie pee pee pad for elimination.  She would be a great choice for someone who doesn't like scooping the litter box !

SALEM

Salem has got to be one of the most well-known cats in our Main Cat Room.  She is always by the door ready to greet anyone who comes in, and if you're not careful she will try to make a break for it!  She is a chubby, short-haired black girl who enjoys being the center of attention.

PANDA

DOB February 2001

Panda is a black and white female who came to us as a pregnant stray. Having raised her six beautiful babies, she is now spayed and ready for a home of her own. Panda is very sweet natured. While she isn't too sure about being picked up and held, she does love attention and enjoys being petted. She loves to play with furry mice. She will often walk around the house carrying her furry toys while meowing and will drop them off at your feet to let you know she wants to play. Panda would do best in a quiet household without other cats. (Rose & Brian)

SASSY

DOB 2000

"Sassy came to us in February 2003 as a pregnant stray," says her foster mom. "She was a very devoted mommy to her babies (who have since found homes) and is now spayed and ready for a home of her own. She is a petite brown tabby. She is very active and loves to bat toys all around the house. She would do best in a single cat household or with one other cat, as she has a very dominate personality and can sometimes be bossy towards other cats. She does love attention from her humans and enjoys having her head scratched." (Rose & Brian)

SENIOR CAT

ARLENE
DOB August 2001

This long-haired, black & white beauty is a little shy at first, but once she gets to know you she is your best buddy.  She likes to be petted and brushed, and enjoys laying next to you against your leg.

2 PAW DECLAW

FOSTERED
SYBIL
DOB August 1999

2 PAW DECLAW

Sybil is an orange tabby and white female who is very vocal.  She has an insistent, somewhat grumpy quality to her voice that belies her sweet personality.  She demands attention, but she returns the favor with lots of purrs, leg rubs, and head-butts. Sybil will co-exist with other cats but seems to prefer cat-friendly dogs over other cats. She loves to sleep with you! A few of Sybil's favorite past times include eating canned food, sleeping in the sunshine and licking plastic bags. (Amber)

MR. TINKLES aka "007"

DOB 1998

Mr. Tinkles is an older Persian that is very active for his age and for having kidney and cardiac conditions. He's a real sweetie who loves to play hide-n-seek and dart from room to room. He cuddles at night and will brush your hair with his paws. Mr. Tinkles sometimes has a hard time finding his litterbox. AM

MONDAY

DOB MAY 2001

Monday is a handsome dude that was one of 5 kittens found at the age of 3 days old (hence the Monday thru Friday names). Monday had a bad eye infection as a newborn and this resulted in the loss of his left eye (see him sleeping in his "play" glasses to the left) and also suffered from gingivitis as he grew up and had to have all his teeth removed. He is in good health now and is ready to find his forever home. Monday is a very very sweet loving, "cuddle and pet me" kitty. He loves attention and will tap you on the arm to let you know he's there.  He loves to give kisses. He does well playing with a younger male cat (who he can chase) and is good with dogs and kids. MADDY

DOB 2000

Maddy is a dsh brown tabby who we estimate to have been born in 2000. Maddy is a very sweet girl with beautiful dark green eyes who loves attention. She gets along well with other cats, but prefers cats who have a quieter nature about them. She is still learning how to play (something she must not have picked up in her previous life as a stray), and is eager to learn. She definitely knows what food is as she comes running when she hears her foster parents in the kitchen and tries to convince them she should have what they are having. Maddy is already spayed, microchipped and current on all of her shots. Due to ongoing tooth and gum problems, Maddy recently had to have all of her teeth extracted. According to our vet, she has made a full recovery and is doing well. She has no problems eating both hard and soft food, but like most cats, she definitely prefers canned food of course. (R&B)

JASMINE

DOB 1995?

Jasmine is a brown tabby and white female.  This [approximate] 10-12 year old, declawed domestic shorthair has the sweetest disposition and is just a doll -- especially with that little brown nose! She is a bit shy at first and wouldn't do well in an overly-active home with lots of other pets or high traffic. But once she decides to make YOU her one and only, she'll be a terrific companion for life!  She needs a quiet home and would probably be okay with another cat or two -- as long as the other cats are non-aggressive! Due to ongoing tooth and gum problems, Jasmine recently had to have all of her teeth extracted. According to our vet, she has made a full recovery and is doing well. She has no problems eating both hard and soft food, but like most cats, she definitely prefers canned food of course. (R&B)
